X Prize Marks Fuel-Efficiency Spot For Future Cars

Oliver Kuttner and his team of designers have seen the future of fuel-efficient cars topping the dreamed-of mark of 100 miles per gallon. This week, the Edison2 team is being rewarded for its vision with half of the $10 million X Prize.

To get into the Edison2's four-seater gas-powered vehicle, dubbed the Very Light Car, passenger and driver climb in through a window — just like a racecar. That might not be so easy for Grandma. But Kuttner, who's 6-foot-4 and weighs 250 pounds, has no trouble jumping into the driver's seat for a victory lap around Charlottesville, Va.

More than 100 competitors also jumped at the chance to compete for the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize.

The prize will be shared among three teams: two from the United States and one from Switzerland. The honor is awarded to teams that create super-fuel-efficient vehicles with mainstream potential.

A Car You Can Push Around


The top prize-winning car is called the Very Light Car with good reason. It weighs just 840 pounds. You can push it with just a finger or two. The aerodynamic car looks like a futuristic egg suspended on four small wheels.

Kuttner says the car has just the basics.

"It has a heater. It has some basic ventilation. It accelerates briskly enough not to hold up traffic. But it's just a modest car," Kuttner says.  But it does get over 100 mpg.

A Sneak Peek At The Winning Car

As Kuttner drives around the streets of Charlottesville, the car hugs corners and stops on a dime. But the real test for the competition occurred over the summer at the Michigan International Speedway. There, the team's professional race car drivers ran it through safety tests used by Consumer Reports on mainstream cars.

"I think these cars are very much in their development stages," says David Champion, Consumer Reports' director of automobile testing.

He says car engineers still need to iron out kinks with braking, emergency handling and acceleration.

"But they really showed the passion and the drive and the ingenuity of these engineers to produce these cars that were extremely fuel efficient," Champion says.

Peter Diamandis, CEO of the X Prize Foundation, says the goal of the competition is to change what people want to drive.

"This is a prize to show the public that you can have a car that is beautiful, affordable, fast, safe and, 'Oh by the way — it can get over 100 mpg or the gas equivalent.' And why would you want anything else?"

Designing For Mass Appeal


Competitors had to demonstrate that their vehicles have mass appeal for consumers and mainstream automakers.

"So if anything is going to have an impact, it's got to scale," says Felix Kramer, the founder of CalCars, an advocacy group for plug-in hybrids. "And it's got to reach the large automakers as well because it's very rare that you get a new auto company coming in."

Electrification


Kramer says most automakers are looking to bolster their fleets of electric cars — a trend that was certainly on display in the winner's circle for the X Prize.

The other winning teams include X-Tracer from Switzerland and Li-ion Motors from Charlotte, N.C., which will get $2.5 million each for designing electric cars that won top prizes in the alternative category.

The X-Tracer's vehicle, called the E-Tracer 7009, had the highest fuel efficiency rating in the competition, measuring an equivalent of more than 197 mpg, according to the official X Prize results. The car accommodates two passengers in a design that looks like a motorcycle with a cab on top of it.

Team Li-ion's Wave II two-seater also earned a high fuel efficiency rating — the equivalent of more than 171 mpg.

Carrying The Lessons Forward

Inside the Edison2 workshop in Lynchburg, Va., a production team of more than a dozen uses recyclable and low-cost materials to make the company's cars.

"If we as a society want to use less energy, we must design cars that can be sold for, let's say, $20,000 and deliver this unprecedented level of efficiency," Kuttner says.

He says he thinks Edison2's winning vehicle — the Very Light Car — could sell for this price if it ever reaches the mainstream market. That's still a ways down the road. But their engines are revved up.

Ford says 40 mpg Focus Coming in 2011

Ford Motor, masterful at milking its models for multiple media mentions, rolled out the whole line of next-generation, 2012 Focus compacts -- not just the hot-rod ST it had hyped and that we told you about in this earlier Drive On post -- at the Paris auto show Wednesday.

Of particular interest: A U.S. version that's supposed to get a 40 mpg highway rating. Sounds good, but is 40 mpg highway so high, really?

Hyundai Sonata, a bigger car, is rated a commendable 35 mpg on the highway. Volkswagen Golf and Jetta diesels are rated 42 mpg highway -- no need to wait if 40's your bogey.

The fuel-efficiency version of the Focus will come with an automatic transmission. Ford doesn't specify, but if it's the so-called DSG manu-matic, we'll need some convincing. That gearbox in the smaller Fiesta was unpleasant to drive, as we detailed in this Test Drive column.

Manu-matics are actual manual transmissions, equipped with clutches, but no clutch pedals. The transmission does the shifting; you don't. The solid connection between engine and transmission provided by a true manual gives better fuel economy than does the fluid coupling of a conventional automatic. But without the fluid-filled torque converter of a typical automatic, a manu-matic car can be a slug off the line.

Automatics are so sophisticated nowadays that they can get better mileage than manuals -- regardless of the the slippage in their torque converters -- if the vehicle-control computer babysits their shift patterns. No yee-hah revving or slam-bam passing gear downshifts.

Apply that same nanny-ish computer control to a manu-matic, and the fuel economy number gets even better, which is why Ford likes that gearbox.

U.S. cars all get a new-design, 2-liter, four-cylinder engine with twin variable-timing overhead camshafts and direct injection. Big words that should mean bigger power than you'd otherwise get from an engine that size. But Ford gives no power ratings.

U..S.-market, 2012 Focuses (Focii?) go into production late this year in Michigan and should be in showrooms early next year. The high-performance ST is due in 2012. Pricing and features won't be specified until next month, Ford says. (What did we say about Ford being able to milk its model rollouts?)

Highest MPG List Has Some Surprises

It was only a couple of years ago that gasoline prices peaked at more than $4 a gallon. Even though prices receded, few doubt that high-priced gas could eventually be with us again. In light of that, you'd think that the landscape would be filled today with 40-m.p.g. cars. Well, it isn't.

The surprise comes from a list the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency put together of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in the past 25 years.

Few are from today. Most are from many years ago. For all the talk today about hybrids, electrics and greater fuel efficiency from conventional engines, the list underscores how little progress we've made toward weaning ourselves off oil.

No wonder that hyper-milers like Louis Hudgin of Gilbert, Ariz., were driving old cars like Hudgin's 2001 Honda Insight when we interviewed them a couple years ago.

Modern cars didn't get as much mileage as the older ones, a big problem for those who squeeze as many miles out of every gallon of gas as Hudgin does.

Hudgin was routinely getting more than 100 m.p.g.

Granted, a lot of those high m.p.g. cars of yore were pretty lousy. In the past, it was uninspiring cars like the Geo Metro and Chevy Sprint leading the gas mileage race, making a 2010 Toyota Prius look like a luxury car in comparison.

Ford Motor To Put Focus On Fuel Efficiency

DEARBORN, Mich.—Ford Motor Co. is to unveil its all-new Focus compact car on Monday, and a telling detail is a small bump on each of the vehicle's taillights.

These lips jut out just enough to interrupt the airflow around the back of the car, reducing turbulence and allowing the redesigned Focus to travel a bit farther on a tank of gas. Most customers might never notice, but it is the kind of detail Ford engineers now refer to as "one percenters"—tweaks that add up to increased fuel efficiency.

These incremental improvements are actually part of a larger plan launched by Chief Executive Alan Mulally when he arrived in 2006: introduce only the best-in-class cars and trucks.

Mr. Mulally is betting that winning bragging rights in key areas such as quality and fuel efficiency will enable Ford to pull customers away from age-old rivals General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC, and move the auto maker into an elite class of global giants that includes Toyota Motor Corp. and Volkswagen AG.

Leading on quality and safety are the "price of admission" to the top ranks of the global auto industry, Mr. Mulally said last week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. He added that improving fuel efficiency and offering new technologies are "strategically important because green technology and smart innovations are helping us serve our customers and differentiate Ford."

Since 2006, Mr. Mulally has shed Ford's noncore brands, steadied its balance sheet, accelerated new-model development and cut production to match consumer demand—all in an effort to turn Ford into a leaner, more-focused organization.

He also has pushed the company's engineers to make sure that Ford can claim that its vehicles are the best in their segments. The auto maker has had some success. In November, Consumer Reports magazine put Ford's overall quality on the same level as that of Toyota and Honda Motor Co., and rated the quality of the Ford Fusion sedan as better than that of the segment's juggernauts, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.A few months ago, the Ford Taurus full-size sedan arrived with some safety innovations that are normally found only in luxury cars, such as a system that warns drivers of vehicles entering their blind spots. On the technology front, Ford has been turning heads with its Sync in-car entertainment system that links to iPods and cellphones.

There is no guarantee this will pave the way for Ford's recovery. Detroit auto makers have made previous promises to produce world-class cars that never panned out. Foreign rivals such as Toyota, Honda, and Volkswagen are flush with cash compared with Ford, and have stronger reputations among passenger-car buyers.

Americans also have proved fickle regarding fuel economy. They flocked to small cars when gas prices were high, but a Consumer Reports survey released last week showed respondents put safety, quality and value at the top of the list of factors they consider the most important when buying a new car. The number of people who listed "environmentally friendly/green" as one of their top three priorities fell eight percentage points over last year's results.

For Ford, it's so far, so good. In 2009, Ford increased its U.S. market share by 1.1 percentage points to 16.1%, and reported almost $1 billion in net income in the third quarter.

The new Focus is to be introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Monday and is expected to go into production in Europe and the U.S. in the second half of the year. Pricing for the car hasn't been released yet.

The car will be available with a new version of the Sync system that can provide wireless Internet access to passengers, but perhaps Ford's biggest effort went into improving the vehicle's fuel economy.

At the Detroit auto show Monday, company chairman Bill Ford is expected to say the redesigned Focus will be the class-leading car in fuel economy where it will be sold: China, Europe and North America.

The new Focus doesn't yet have a miles-per-gallon rating from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, but people familiar with the matter said Ford engineers expect the car to go at least 40 miles on a gallon of gas in highway driving. That would put the new Focus ahead of the older model and competitors such as the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Chevrolet Cobalt, all of which are rated at 35 or 36 mpg on the highway.

Ford's new focus on fuel efficiency is a big change for the company known for its F-150 pickup trucks and Explorer sport-utility vehicles. Until recently, the thinking in Ford's vehicle-development group was "we're losing money as a corporation and we need to strip cost out" to improve profit margins, said William F. Gubing III, North American program manager for Ford's small cars.

When gasoline spiked to $4 a gallon, Mr. Mulally and product development chief Derrick Kuzak drove a new mantra: "Fuel economy leads to sales, which leads to profitability," Mr. Gubing said.

Then, at the start of last year, the company widened its approach, often seeking ways to eke out small gains. A fuel-economy course became mandatory for all engineers. Ford created a Web site for employees to offer up their own suggestions to improve its vehicles' fuel efficiency.

Hundreds of ideas poured in to try to claim the $100 prize for every accepted concept, said Ford's head of vehicle energy-management engineering, Nizar Trigui. The company has adopted at least a dozen of the ideas, but Mr. Trigui declined to describe them because they are still under development to be used in future products.

One feature adopted from luxury car makers in the Focus is an active grille shutter. Operating like Venetian blinds, the shutters under the hood close up at higher speed to prevent air from entering the engine compartment and improve aerodynamic performance by 6% on the highway. At slower speeds, the blinds open up, allowing more air under the hood to help with engine cooling not necessary at higher speeds.

Other improvements include tucking the windshield-wiper blades below the hood to improves the car's aerodynamic performance. Engineers also may add small arrow-shaped grooves on the side rear-view mirrors to reduce wind drag, features now found on the Ford Taurus and Flex crossover vehicle.

But each approach still has to be hashed out between engineers and designers, who often bristle at fuel-economy changes that impinge on a car's overall styling.

The first approach to the taillight lip "was a wing off the back of the car," Mr. Gubing said. "The designers said, 'No way am I putting a wing on the back of my car,' " he added.

But when the large wing was reduced to a small bump, Focus designers got on board. Today, "fuel economy holds a much bigger percentage of leverage in the debate," Mr. Gubing said.

Ford Motor Wants More MPG From Mustang

It's the Ford Mustang against the Chevy Camaro in a race for muscle car sales dominance, and Ford is aiming to take the lead with gas mileage.

Yes, fuel economy.

Ford Motor Co's (F.N) iconic Mustang, revered for powerful race modified models over four decades, has never been known for fuel efficiency, but by 2011 it will get 30 miles per gallon on highways, according to the U.S. automaker.

The Camaro, brought back into production in 2009 after a seven-year absence, has a V-6 engine that gets 29 miles per gallon on the highway and 304 horsepower.

Ford wants to close the performance gap between base models of the Mustang and Camaro with a 2011 model year Mustang, scheduled to begin production early next year, that will have V-6, 305 horsepower engine, six-speed transmission, and get 30 mpg on the highway.

"When you are buying a sports car, you want to have that feel of performance," said Barb Samardzich, Ford's head of powertrain engineering. "At the same time, there is no reason why you should have to compromise on fuel economy."

Ford is "playing a little catch up" with the Mustang fighting for the same piece of the pie as the Camaro, IHS Global Insight analyst Aaron Bragman said.

"The Camaro took them by surprise in terms of the power and fuel efficiency of their V-6," Bragman said. "They are trying to make Mustang more competitive, and they have to ... because the Camaro is eating their lunch in terms of sales."

Through October, Mustang 2009 sales totaled 56,469 in the United States, while Camaro sales totaled 47,233. Camaro U.S. sales began in April, and it has been outselling the Mustang for several months.

"They want to get that sales leadership back," Bragman said of Ford.

The 2011 Mustang will represent a 25 percent highway mileage improvement over the current version using a new 3.7 liter V-6 engine, six-speed automatic transmission, better aerodynamics and other changes.

Ford also added features to the V-6 Mustang that had been found on the more expensive versions of the car, including standard dual exhausts and better brakes. The V-6 accounts for about half of all Mustang sales.

Ford has found that customers have embraced smaller engines in many vehicles, such as the Fusion mid-sized sedan where 80 percent of 2010 model year sales have been in 4-cylinder or hybrid drives.

Ford said it would keep making V-8 versions of the Mustang.

"I think we will see V-8s in Mustangs for a very, very long time," Samardzich said.

Ford has not said how much the 2011 Mustang will cost, but executives said it would remain competitive with current versions.
